Business Headshots vs Branding Sessions

Today on the blog, I am answering some common questions asked regarding business headshots and personal branding sessions. How do you know what type of session you need to book to accurately represent your business? Read on for more information.

Question: What is the difference between photos for branding and those for headshots? Is there a difference?

Answer: There is a distinct difference between Business Headshots and Business Branding Sessions. Both are equally as important, but the main difference is how you want to portray yourself in your business or brand.

Corporate Headshot Sessions

In the example of Corporate Headshots, if you work for or own a small organization, you may want to have corporate headshots taken to be used to market your employees and organization in printed or web material. A corporate headshot session can be scheduled and take up to 1-2 hours, depending on the number of employees. In general, each individual would have their photo taken using the same background and lighting set up to ensure consistency between all photos. Having a photographer that will travel to the site of the business saves the organization time and money, as it includes one-time set-up fees and each employee can be photographed in between meetings rather than traveling off-site.

Business Branding Sessions

A Personal or Business Branding session would involve much more detail. Branding sessions are designed for individuals who would like to show their personality through their brand and business. Rather than one headshot, this session would be scheduled over a 2-3 hour time frame and may include several outfits or location changes. The images captured during this session could be used for print or online marketing materials. Not only do the photographs showcase you as the business owner, but they could also be color coordinated to show your brand image. In some cases, if the business owner sells products, the products can be incorporated into the session as well. Here are a few examples of a branding session for Bethanie Photography.

Question: What’s is the most common branding mistake that you see?

Answer: It is easy to confuse the definition of branding and marketing. At least, I know I was confused about it. Branding is how you want the world to see your business and marketing is making the world aware of your brand and business. In the beginning stages of setting up a business, it is easy to get lost in the details of picking your business name, logo, fonts, colors, and images, etc. Once you have all of that in place, it is important to move on to the next step which is actively marketing your business, whether online or in-person, to put your brand to work for you.
